"ONCE A YEAR,
GO SOMEPLACE YOU'VE
NEVER BEEN BEFORE."
In 2015, Donovan entered the 5th grade at a local elementary school. In the first few weeks, it was clear that Donovan lacked basic needs such as a book bag, school supplies, and new shoes. Donovan struggled with a personality conflict with his teacher and was extremely disrespectful and disruptive. School faculty knew there had to be a change.
A few weeks later, a staff member approached Donovan, and asked if he would like to join the school's lacrosse team. Donovan was excited to learn a new sport and "score a bunch of goals." After a few practices, he showed improved performance on the field and was bonding with other students. Coastal coaches and school staff members were able to support Donovan both academically and behaviorally. By the end of the year, Donovan's behavior had improved drastically, his grades were thriving, and he was a star athlete on the field.
